The Challenge
Luxury expedition travel in Antarctica requires capturing the "spirit of discovery" while navigating some of the most volatile weather conditions on the planet.
For Abercrombie & Kent, the goal was to produce a high-end visual library that balanced the raw, untamed power of the polar environment with the sophisticated guest experience of a boutique cruise.
The Approach
Photographing in the Antarctic Peninsula, I focused on the "Old Master" philosophy of light—utilising the low-hanging polar sun to create dramatic, high-contrast scenes. By working with the natural textures of ancient blue ice and the erratic movements of Adelie penguin colonies, I provided a cinematic perspective on the continent. I prioritised "layered" compositions, placing expedition zodiacs or guests in the middle ground against the towering scale of glaciers to emphasize the vastness of the terrain.
The Impact
The resulting visual assets provided A&K with a versatile portfolio for digital marketing and high-end brochures. By focusing on the intimate connection between the traveller and the environment, the imagery serves as a powerful conversion tool for those seeking a transformative adventure.
Photography in Sub-Zero Conditions
Beyond the creative vision, a high-quality production in the Antarctic Peninsula requires a specialised approach. Photographing in extreme cold presents a unique set of obstacles, from rapid battery depletion to the constant threat of equipment-killing condensation. I utilised a rigorous protocol to ensure zero downtime, including thermal insulation for power sources and meticulous acclimatisation stages when transitioning between the frozen exterior and the ship’s interior.
