Exploring Peru’s best kept secrets
Travel in Peru is fundamentally defined by its dramatic geography. As an international photographer who has worked in over 120 countries,
I have found that few places match Peru for its sheer cultural complexity and geographical contrast. In collaboration with the Photo Atlas Society, I conceptually designed a unique 11-day photographic expedition titled Altitudes of Identity, specifically designed to document how Peru's diverse altitudes shape its contemporary and traditional ways of life.
The visual journey began at sea level in the coastal capital of Lima, where I captured the kinetic energy of the Chorrillos fish market and traced the culinary value chain that defines modern Peruvian gastronomy. From the coast, the route moved into the Andes, heading beyond the standard tourist trails of the Sacred Valley to connect deeply with local communities.
As a travel photographer, my goal is always to move past surface-level imagery to achieve authentic cultural immersion. In the high-altitude villages surrounding Ollantaytambo, I was invited into the homes of local artisans, allowing for intimate, up-close portraiture that tells a story of resilience, tradition, and craftsmanship.
From High Peaks to Tropical Canopies
The expedition route was a deliberate masterclass in navigating contrasting environmental palettes. Crossing a spectacular 4,300-metre mountain pass, the journey descended into the semi-jungle of Quillabamba. Here, the rugged highland tones gave way to lush, tropical greens as I documented the daily rhythms of local coffee and cacao plantations, and tracked the elusive gallito de las rocas (the Andean Cock of the Rock) at dusk.
Returning to the historic streets of Cusco, the focus shifted to editorial street photography, capturing the intersection of ancient Incan foundations and modern daily life. The ultimate physical and visual crescendo of the trip was a trek to Polcayo Mountain, a stunning, non-touristy rainbow mountain where mineral sedimentation sets the landscape ablaze at 5,000 metres above sea level.
